Neighborhood Soapbox Derby
Race Day: Sept 13, 2025

Come Join the Fun - Neighborhood Soapbox Derby
Thanks to all that participated. We could not have pulled it off without you.
See this year's Neighborhood Soapbox Derby.
Mark your calendar! The Neighborhood Soapbox Derby is rolling your way on Saturday, September 13, 2025 and you're invited to come cheer, laugh, and enjoy a great—what we hope will become—neighborhood tradition.
Races start at 10:00 AM (Race Day Schedule), but come early to see the racers set up and check out the creative cars. Vote on your favorite one. Bring a chair, bring the kids, and bring your excitement. It's going to be a good time.
We will also have Open Class racing. There will be cars that can be borrowed for a race down the hill. Before taking that run, you will need, a helmet with chin strap, and the Liability Waiver signed and turned in to a Checkered Flag Official. Checkered Flag Officials will have copies of the wavier on Race Day. Check here for other requirements and recommended safety equipment.
Whether you know someone racing, just want to see homemade gravity racers in action, or to take a trip down the track yourself, this is going to be a fun and friendly community event you won't want to miss. We will be holding the Derby on Cedar Ridge Rd., between Oakridge Rd. and Pineridge Rd. Here's the Derby Venue Map.
We hope to see you there!
Shift Into High Gear—We Need You!
From the start line to the finish line, volunteers make race day unforgettable. Be part of the pit crew that keeps the excitement on track—lend a hand, cheer on the racers, and share the thrill of derby day! The Soapbox Derby isn’t just about the cars—it’s about the community coming together for a fun-filled family day.
I’ve dreamed of hosting a neighborhood soapbox derby for years. A past attempt never came to life, but this year I was determined to make it happen. And it is happening! But I’ll admit—it’s taking more volunteers and borrowed items than I first imagined. That’s where you come in.
We want this to grow into a yearly tradition that our whole neighborhood looks forward to. While building and racing cars is fun for adults and kids alike, the real joy is in creating a community event that brings us all together.
On behalf of the entire Soapbox Derby Race Committee, I’m asking for your help. Please volunteer and join us in making this day not only a success, but a memory we’ll all cherish. If you have any questions, please get ahold of me, Jason Hoyt, personally at (jason@hoytlink.com)
For those who would like to promote the Derby, on our Administrative Page we have some flyers & posters that can be printed out and posted.

Interested in Building Your Own Soapbox Derby Racer?!
Ready to roll? Now's your chance to be part of something exciting right here in our neighborhood!
We're inviting anyone – kids, teens, adults, families, and teams, to build your own gravity-powered soapbox racer for the upcoming Neighborhood Soapbox Derby on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
No engines, no motors. Just wheels, gravity, and your own creativity. Whether you're aiming for speed, style, or just want to be part of the fun, there's room for everyone on the starting line.
This is a chance to build something real, race with neighbors, and make some great memories. Start sketching your ideas now. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
Never built one before? Don't worry, we've got examples, ideas, and simple rules to get you started.
- Our Derby will be most like these three videos. We will not have jumps or obstacles. This is in part for safety reasons, but this will allow for participation from a much broader skill set.

I picked up a few GOKIT® car kits from www.soapboxes.com to help make building a racer a little quicker. You absolutely do not need to buy one. You can build from scratch, going totally custom. For those wishing to go the easier route, each kit included the wheels, a sturdy steering system, and all the associated hardware. It also provided three different braking ideas (see the Rules for braking requirements), along with a cut pattern for a simple racer and some basic instructions.
You’ll still need to supply your own wood (the basic design only requires about half a sheet of plywood), braking setup, steering wheel, and paint to finish it off.
The kits cost $99 each, but if you order a carton (six kits), the price drops to $87 each. (I ordered in bulk, but all of my extras are already gone.) Because the kits ship from Canada, it’s a good idea to order early to ensure they arrive well before the derby. When I ordered mine on a Friday, it was processed the following Monday and delivered the next week on Tuesday. Delivery times may vary.
