Interested in Building Your Own Soapbox Derby Racer?!

Ready to roll? Now's your chance to be part of something exciting right here in our neighborhood!

We're inviting anyone – kids, teens, adults, families, and teams, to build your own gravity-powered soapbox racer for the upcoming Neighborhood Soapbox Derby on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

No engines, no motors. Just wheels, gravity, and your own creativity. Whether you're aiming for speed, style, or just want to be part of the fun, there's room for everyone on the starting line.

This is a chance to build something real, race with neighbors, and make some great memories. Start sketching your ideas now. We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Never built one before? Don't worry, we've got examples, ideas, and simple rules to get you started.

Ancillary

I picked up a few GOKIT® car kits from www.soapboxes.com to help make building a racer a little quicker. You absolutely do not need to buy one. You can build from scratch, going totally custom. For those wishing to go the easier route, each kit included the wheels, a sturdy steering system, and the associated hardware. It also provided three different braking ideas (see the Rules for braking requirements), along with a cut pattern for a simple racer and some basic instructions.

You’ll still need to supply your own wood (the basic design only requires about half a sheet of plywood), braking setup, steering wheel, and paint to finish it off. Assembly required!

The kits cost $99 each, but if you order a carton (six kits), the price drops to $87 each. Because the kits ship from Canada, it’s a good idea to order early to ensure they arrive well before the derby. When I ordered mine on a Friday, it was processed the following Monday and delivered the next week on Tuesday. Delivery times may vary.

For those that are interested, here are some derbies that have been held around Utah.

Read about the American Fork Steel Days Soap Box Derby in the Daily Herald.

Payson Utah held a derby in 2016.

And of course there is the Red Bull Soapbox Derby that was held last year (2025) on June 14th at the Utah State Capitol Grounds.
Our derby will not be like the Red Bull one. We will not have jumps or obstacles (for safety & accessibility to all skill levels).

Here is the All-American Soapbox Derby.

Here are a couple of derbies by some serious competitors:

Our derby won't be like the ones in these videos, but since derby videos are cool!...
